Murchison Falls National Park: Nile Cruise, Game Drives and the Falls
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest at 3,840 square kilometres. Its centrepiece is the waterfall itself, where the Victoria Nile is squeezed through an 8-metre gorge before plunging 45 metres into the Devil’s Cauldron. UWA lists a launch cruise to the base of the falls, a hike to the top, game drives, birdwatching, sport fishing and Budongo Forest chimpanzee tracking among its activities.
The wildlife is dense and easy to see. UWA reports over 900 elephants, more than 10,000 buffalo and about 35,000 Uganda kobs, along with giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. More than 556 bird species have been recorded, and the shoebill stork is commonly spotted along the Albert Delta. Park entry is listed at USD 45 for foreign non-residents.

Kibale National Park: The Primate Capital of Uganda
Kibale National Park is home to 13 primate species and more than 1,500 chimpanzees living in at least 12 communities. According to UWA, guided tracking walks leave Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 8:00, 11:00 and 14:00, last between two and five hours and have a success rate above 90 percent. Groups are limited to six visitors, and the minimum age is 16. The park also shelters over 120 mammal species and around 370 birds.
The experience is loud, quick and thrilling. Chimpanzees hoot, chase and crash through the canopy, and your guide will follow them until you reach a good viewing spot for your hour. The Kibale permit for a foreign non-resident is reported at about USD 250 in 2026, with USD 200 in the low season and a rise to USD 300 in 2027. The habituation experience is reported at USD 300 to 400, so ask your operator for the exact figure.
Budongo Forest, on the Murchison side, also offers chimpanzee tracking at a lower reported cost, and a comfortable place to stay is Budongo Eco Lodge. Many travellers do both to compare the two forests.
The Route From Murchison Falls to Kibale: Distance and Drive Time
The two parks lie at opposite ends of western Uganda, so the transfer deserves planning. UWA lists Murchison Falls as about 305 kilometres and four to five hours from Kampala to the southern gate, and Kibale is roughly five to six hours from Kampala, according to operator guides. Between the parks, operators describe the drive as around 400 kilometres and seven to eight hours, usually heading south through Hoima and Fort Portal, the gateway town for Kibale.
Do not underestimate that day. Roads are mostly good but can slow down near towns, and park tracks add time on the Murchison side. Leave early, pack a picnic lunch and treat the transfer as a travel day rather than a stop in itself. If you prefer, you can fly into one of Murchison’s airfields, which UWA lists as Pakuba and Chobe, to save time on the northern leg.
A smart way to structure the trip is to work from north to south, starting at Murchison Falls, crossing to Kibale and then continuing to Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi if you want to extend. This avoids doubling back and lets you finish with the gentler forest days.
A Sample 5-Day Murchison Falls and Kibale Itinerary
Five days is the minimum for a comfortable circuit, and six gives an extra buffer for the long transfer. This plan starts and ends near Entebbe.
Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Murchison Falls
Drive north through Masindi to the park, a journey of roughly four to five hours, and settle in for an afternoon game drive as the light softens.
Day 2: Nile Cruise and Falls
Start with a morning game drive or a launch cruise to the base of the falls, then hike to the top for the famous view of the Victoria Nile forcing through the gorge.
Day 3: Transfer to Kibale
Set off early for the long drive south to Fort Portal and Kibale, stopping for a picnic lunch. Arrive in time to rest before tomorrow’s tracking.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking
Join a morning tracking group at Kanyanchu, or the full-day habituation experience if you hold a permit. Spend the afternoon at leisure.
Day 5: Return to Kampala or Entebbe

Best Time to Go, Permits, Costs and What to Pack
The dry months of June to September and December to February give the best game viewing at Murchison, because animals gather along the Nile, and they make the Kibale trails easier. They are also the busiest, so book chimpanzee permits and lodging at least three to six months ahead. April, May and November are wetter, with cheaper chimpanzee permits, although low-season permits are generally non-reschedulable. Check the Uganda National Meteorological Authority seasonal forecast when you settle on dates.
Budget for park entry as well as permits. UWA lists Murchison Falls at USD 45 for foreign non-residents, and you should add the Kibale chimpanzee permit, a vehicle with a driver-guide, accommodation, meals and tips. The Uganda Tourism Board’s activities guide lists extras you might add, such as cultural visits and additional cruises.
Pack lightweight, long-sleeved clothing in muted colours, sturdy walking shoes, a waterproof jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and binoculars. For Kibale, bring gardening gloves and a small daypack. Travel insurance that covers permits and medical care is strongly recommended.
